Other than "tradition" why is jewelry the standard bridesmaid gift?
Most people who have said they were bridesmaids in the past all say that they never wore the jewelry again and it's just collecting dust. So why do brides (and those advising them on gifts to give) keep insisting that is the only acceptable gift and that something more personal that fits their hobbies and personalities is not acceptable?
Yeah I don't get it either. I only have two bridesmaids and god bless them they have done most the planning. I'm giving mine and engraved Ipod nano each in our wedding colours. No point getting them jewelry they will never wear.
I think brides just usually buy jewelry they want them to wear at the wedding. That's all.

I have been in two weddings and received no jewellery… in one I got a MAC gift card and a gift certificate for a manicure / pedicure / massage… in another the bride paid for us to have a weekend in Niagara falls all together.
I think the reason why jewellery is so often given as a gift is because the bride wants the girls to be matching on the big day.
Personally, I would suggest something a little more personalized and fun!

tradition just makes it easier for us to be nice without putting thought into the present

They can use it forever (if they want to). Also, because it lasts forever, the bride probably thinks that whenever they wear or look at it, they'll remember her wedding. Or, maybe all the women think that's what all the bridesmaids want or are expecting to receive! Hope this helps with you question!
