Unique Puzzle Rings

Unique Silver Jewelry

A silver ring traditionally comprised of four, six, eight, or twelve rings intricately connected to form one ring is called a puzzle ring. Contemporary silver puzzle rings have five or seven rings connecting to form one. The Latin word gemelli (meaning twins) is the origin of gimmel rings from which the puzzle ring was born.

Sometimes called Harem rings, the gimmel ring was used as a wedding ring.  Tradition is that either wearer of the gimmel ring could not cheat on the other without removing the ring and putting it back together afterward. It could prove to be quite a task for the twelve ring puzzle rings.

The exact beginnings of this unique silver jewelry are unknown. Some believe that it appeared in Asia over 2000 years ago. This link with ancient cultures is believed to have made its way to the Middle East with tradesmen. It is said that sultans and sheiks required all of their wives to wear a puzzle ring to ensure they would not be unfaithful. Regardless of the origin these rings are becoming more popular.

Credited with introducing puzzle rings to America is a 97 year old ex-pilot who makes them. Joseph Grant, better known as Jose Grant, flew C-54’s in World War II as part of Air Transport Command. During his duties in Egypt he met a man named Bakhar, a silversmith who peddled his wares at the Shepherd’s Hotel in Cairo. Bakhar would find pieces of silver, melt it down, and make puzzle rings. Intrigued by the jewelry, Jose bought one and brought it home with him.

Jose’s career as a jeweler began in 1947 when he decided to see if he could make a puzzle ring himself. Needless to say, he succeeded. Over 60 years later, the pilot turned jeweler, is the leader in the manufacture of puzzle rings in the U.S.

Today silver puzzle rings are sold by a wide variety of manufacturer’s and dealers. The intricate pattern of the rings can be made into virtually anything from dolphins to Celtic knots. The more rings there are the harder it is to put back together. For instance, an eight band ring requires about 20 steps to reassemble. Most retailers of these unique silver rings include the instructions on how to put it back together.
